Freshwater Cricket Club 2012 Sussex Tour Report

I have just about recovered from the fantastic Freshwater Cricket Club 2012 tour to Sussex, thanks to everyone who came along and made it a cracking weekend, see attached photo.

The group convened on friday evening in Steyning for a quick beer and bbq before heading in to Brighton for Sussex vs Middlesex Twenty20 game, which was easily won by Sussex in the end. We continued the party by stumbling our way towards Brighton city centre, before heading back to Steyning. Gosden then decided to continue to ‘party’ on his own for most of the early hours of the morning!

We awoke saturday bleary-eyed and ready to make the hour long drive to Cobham in Surrey for a game against Stoke D’Abernon CC, who had nice ground, and we escaped any rain for the day enabling a full 40 over aside match. Captained by myself we bowled first with Chris Eden and Glenn Bailey starting very tidy spells on a helpful pitch. The Opposition started reasonably well, but a double strike late in his spell gave Bailey the vital breakthroughs. I then rotated the bowlers to give everyone a bit of a go, as the Stoke batsmen weakened and they stumbled to end up with 130 odd. We started slowly with Sam and Sparky opening (yawn!), but Stoke bowled some tight spells. At one stage Freshwater looked behind the rate with plenty of work to do, however Gosden put aside his previous nights antics to steer us to an easy victory in the end. See for their match report.

Saturday evening we returned to Steyning for a few more beverages, and some Fish & Chips, unwittingly excluding an AWOL Mr Pitman!! He made up for his absence by consuming vast amounts of Mickey Finn’s to drown his sorrows and get back at the ‘fish and chippers’!

Sunday came around, and with heavy overnight rain, chances of a game looked slim, so we decended on the local cafe for a cracking fry up. Sparko got the call from his friends at Ashurst CC and we proceeded to the ground and although it had a few puddles here and there, the pitch was not too bad. Neil followed Gosden’s lead from the previous day, by shaking off a hangover to score a rapid 50. Once he was out, we kept chipping in with useful scores, of particular note was PK’s marathon innings for a single figure score which included a pair of broken glasses! We scraped our way up to around 150, a competitive score on a slow pitch. Ashurst got off to a flying start with the ropes being cleared multiple times (at which point Sparko informed us there were a few Steyning 1st team players in their team!)

With Ashurst cruising towards an easy win, Sparky turned to his #1 bowler to make the breakthrough – Henderson stepped and duly delivered, cleaning up two of Ashurst’s key players. A freshwater style collapse ensued, with Gosden feeling fresh after a tee-totalled saturday night, he cleaned up the tail for a remarkable win.

A brilliant weekend all round, with loads of cricket despite the dodgy weather. Thanks everyone for coming along, i will be in touch soon about next year’s tour to Barbados!!
